While some people believe whirlpools reside in the mythical marine realm alongside mermaids and Kraken, they are very much real and this one called “Devil’s Hole” up in Canada is a powerful example of these naturally occurring vortexes.

Tidal whirlpools, also known as maelstroms, are typically formed in narrow ocean straits or channels with fast-flowing water. They are created when opposing currents meet or when a current encounters an obstacle, causing the water to rotate. The formation of these whirlpools is primarily driven by tidal forces, which create strong currents in confined spaces.

While the threat of whirlpools may be exaggerated in films like Pirates of the Caribbean, they are dangerous for swimmers and boats (especially small craft like kayaks) and should be avoided.

Obviously the boaters in the following videos felt confident enough to get up close and personal with Devil’s Hole but you have to put a lot of faith in your motor and we wouldn’t recommend it:
