Climbers from volcanic Ejecta in Indonesia
Climbers from volcanic Ejecta in Indonesia

Surreal drone footage from the Indonesian island Halmahera where a group of climbers ran for cover after reaching the rim of Dukono Volcano only to have it erupt as they peeked over the rim.

Volcano Discovery reports explosive activity continues and a Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in Darwin, Australia has issued warning about a volcanic ash plume that risen to an estimated 8000 feet.

“Stop Summit to Dukono Crater! The climbers were almost hit by eruption material when they summited Dukono peak on August 17. To my horror, Dukono’s activity was so high that vomit material was thrown out of the crater. Before the summit, let’s observe first. Wind direction, how strong the eruption is, and other considerations. Don’t force yourself to summit when the situation doesn’t allow it. Don’t forget, the top is a bonus. Getting home safely is the real goal of climbing!” -@anak_esa
