The Squeezer Gauge at the Lemon Squeezer Cave
The Squeezer Gauge at the Lemon Squeezer Cave

WOODSTOCK, New Hampshire – Spelunking, the time honored pastime of exploring wild cave systems, does not come without it dangers. The dark confines of caves can often be claustrophobic and in the worst case scenario, spelunkers can get wedged in requiring rescue to extract themselves.

To help guests avoid getting lodged in tight choke points within a cave system known as Lemon Squeezer at Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves, in North Woodstock, New Hampshire, the park has installed what they refer to as “Squeeze Gauge” at the entrance:

All of our boulder caves may be bypassed.  If you are worried about not fitting, or are claustrophobic, you can choose to go around each cave and meet your party at the cave exit.  The Lemon Squeezer, the cave with the tightest fit at 16 inches wide, requires you to shimmy through a wooden gauge before entering the cave itself. -Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves

The Squeeze Gauge is no nonsense solution to a serious issue and we think it’s brilliant. Better to be stuck in a bunch of 2×4 lumber at a cave entrance than rock cavity within the chambers. If you’re traveling a group, some folks may have to sit on the sidelines of the Lemon Squeeze but there’s plenty of activities to enjoy at Lost Gorge including panning for gemstones and guided lantern tours. Really neat place to visit.
