Park ranger @ Shenandoah National Park
Park ranger @ Shenandoah National Park

While guidebooks and online reviews can give you some ideas for good spots to visit at National Parks, who better to ask than the people who work the ticket booths at the entrance, our friendly and knowledgeable park rangers.

The following video comes from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia where a visiting motorcyclist is pointed in the direction of the Sawmill Overlook as a can’t miss destination and advised not skip dessert because the park’s Blackberry Ice Cream Pie is outstanding.

I venture to guess that if you posed these same questions to park rangers across the country you will be returned with equally valuable intel that will make your visit that much more memorable. Such a simple trick and a great opportunity to interact with the fine people employed by the National Parks Service.

One of my favorite things to do when visiting a National Park for the first time is to ask a park ranger what their favorite overlook and/or scenic spot is. Shenandoah National Park is also known for their Blackberry Ice Cream Pie which is the main reason I rode Skyline Drive in the first place, so I knew I had to get some tips on what else to have with it for dinner! 🍰 Luckily I also found out that the Big Meadows and Skyland restaurants have similar menus, which saved me from riding in the freezing rain to get to Skyland that night! #RideToFood #MotorcycleTravel #MotorcycleTouring #ShenandoahNationalPark

Had to do a bit of digging to see what this ranger was talking about with the blackberry ice cream pie recommendation and he was not kidding. The signature dessert has a graham cracker crust layered with blackberry ice cream, toasted meringue, and blackberry compote. Yes please and make that a double!
