Philadephia, Pennsylvania — It’s summer in the city of Philadelphia, so warm weather and thunderstorms are common. Less often is a hail storm or, according to the National Weather Service, frozen precipitation.
On Sunday afternoon, a thunderstorm caused severe weather at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). At one point, a small hailstorm occurred. The National Weather Service considers hail frozen participation, which is in the same category as snow. This resulted in NWS Mount Holly calling it snow in their climate report. This trace of hail set a daily snowfall record for July 14th, breaking the previous record of 0.0 inches. This is the fourteenth time that they’ve seen traceable snowfall (i.e., hail) in the months of June-August at Philadelphia International Airport.
So, if you’re a realist, it didn’t snow in Philadelphia this week. If you consider national weather guidelines to be the rule of law, it technically snowed this week at Philadelphia International Airport.
