RANGELEY, Maine – Saddleback might have the greatest comeback story of any ski resort out there. After 55 years of operation, the ski area shutdown in 2015, leaving employees, locals, and Maine skiers at a bit of a loss. But after being purchased by Arctaris Impact Fund, the mountain was able to reopen in 2020. Turning towards Nexamp for solar energy has allowed the newly reopened Saddleback to cut down on energy costs while creating a cleaner image of winter sports in Rangeley, Maine.
“The revitalization journey of Saddleback Mountain showcases a forward-thinking approach to renewable energy and economic revitalization. The partnership between Arctaris Impact Investors and Nexamp has breathed new life into a cherished ski resort and also established a model for sustainable economic development. Through strategic investments in solar energy, they have reduced operational costs, created jobs, and set a standard for environmental responsibility.” – Nexamp
Arctaris started their partnership with Nexamp in 2021 and in 2022, the solar company broke ground on a 31-acre solar farm. In 2023, that farm was connected to the Central Maine Power grid. Arctaris has also created an Environmental Compliance Land Steward role and a Sustainability Committee, ensuring that the company keeps its eyes on the land, on the environment, and on conservation.
In addition to their partnership with Nexamp, Saddleback Mountain has turned their groomer fleet towards PistenBully 600+E EcoGroomers, creating 20% less fuel consumption and 20% less CO2 emissions while operating. Over the past two years, six of these machines have been sold in North America. Two of those were sold to Saddleback. They’ve also installed 12 EV chargers in their parking lot in partnership with Revision Energy, and now have the most chargers of any ski area in Maine.
“This story of transformation at Saddleback Mountain serves as an inspiring example of how collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability can create a profitable and emission-free future. It underscores the potential for renewable energy to power our communities and protect our planet, inviting others to follow in their footsteps toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.” – Nexamp
