Germany — Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher is in the midst of a messy tussle with thieves over pictures from a devastating ski crash.

The Irish Mirror reports three people have been arrested, including the mastermind of the plot, for blackmailing Michael Schumacher and his family.

In 2013, Schumacher’s life was forever changed from a devastating skiing accident. During his first year of retirement, Michael suffered a traumatic head injury while on a ski vacation with his family. Schumacher was skiing off-piste in Meribel when he wiped out after hitting an exposed rock. He has not appeared publicly since the crash, as people are unsure of his current condition.

Three individuals, including Schumacher’s former security guard, recently attempted to extort €15million (£12m) from the family. According to 20 Minuten, they allegedly had personal images of his family, including images of Michael following the crash. The individuals were threatening to release them onto the dark web. The other two individuals were a 53-year-old doorman and his son. All three individuals have been arrested, and a substantial amount of evidence was seized.

This isn’t the first time that the Schumacher family has dealt with blackmailing threats. In 2017, a thief threatened to murder Schumacher’s children unless they paid a hefty ransom. Police quickly arrested him, and he received a suspended sentence.
