Mt. Mansfield, Vermont– Stowe is one of the oldest ski resorts in the country, and it’s chock-full of history. This includes their ski patrol, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this season. Incorporated on January 8, 1934, this search and rescue team shaped the future of North America”s ski industry. In 1936, a skier broke his ankle on Toll Road and was rescued by the Mt. Mansfield Ski Patrol. That injured skier was Minnie Dole, who would become the National Ski Patrol’s first director.

“At Stowe Mountain Resort, we’ve had a ski patrol longer than we’ve had a ski resort,” said Shannon Buhler, Vice President and General Manager of Stowe Mountain Resort. “The Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol is an invaluable asset to Stowe Mountain Resort, embodying the value of safety and camaraderie on the slopes. Their unwavering commitment to ensuring a secure and enjoyable skiing experience is a cornerstone of our mountain community, making Stowe not just a destination for adventure, but a haven where every skier and rider can confidently carve their memories.”

To commemorate this historic anniversary, Stowe released a five-episode video series detailing the history of the Mt Mansfield Ski Patrol. The fifth and final episode was released a few days ago, so it seems like a good time to post the complete series.

Episode One: The first episode covers the ski patrol’s historical background and why it was founded.

Episode Two: This video explores the creation of Stowe’s early trails, ski patrol tasks in its formative years, early certification requirements, and what those patrollers ended up doing after working at Stowe.

Episode Three: How being a ski patroller has changed over the years and their core functions today.

Episode Four: Why ski patrollers choose this profession and how they’re a giant family.

Episode Five: The final episode looks ahead to the future of the Mt. Mansfield Ski Patrol.
