FLOYD HILL, Colorado – A major traffic shift is set to take place on the Floyd Hill section of Colorado’s I-70, with construction expanding on the West Section of the project. Beginning Wednesday, March 20, travelers can expect overnight lane closures and narrower lanes between Exit 241 (Idaho Springs) and Exit 243 (Hidden Valley).
The construction is a part of the Floyd Hill project, set to relieve I-70 traffic between Evergreen and Idaho Springs. According to Fox 31, the $700 million project adds an express lane and increases safety features. It began in 2023 and is scheduled to continue until 2028.
In the West Section of the Floyd Hill project, improvements include the straightening of curves for more consistent speeds, an added express lane, and reconstruction of two bridges. Throughout the construction, drivers can expect alternating single-lane traffic on US 40, single-lane closures on both eastbound and westbound I-70, double right-lane closures, shoulder closures, and narrower lanes.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the project is aimed not only to reduce traffic and make the roadways safer, but also to benefit the environment, improving air and water quality, stream conditions, and wildlife movements.
