If there’s one thing the world of skiing and snowboarding could really work on, it’s inclusiveness. The price of a ticket alone is so outrageous that convincing those who didn’t grow up in the sports are likely to never give them a shot, and that’s before considering the price of tickets.
Fortunately, there are groups and people working to change that, like Green Mountain Adaptive Sports, who host the annual Stowe Monoski Camp. Monoski Camp and Monoski Day brings in adaptive athletes from across New England, all to ski together for a day. Both lessons and clinics are offered to encourage and grow athletes.
Just to be clear, monoski, in this case, is used to refer to the adaptive, seated singular ski that people with disabilities use, not the snowboard-like mono skis.
The next Stowe Monoski Camp is set to take place on January 19, 2025. 25 monoskiers of all ages will come together once again to rip around Stowe Mountain Resort, take one-on-one lessons with PSIA-AASI certified instructors or monoski instructors, and ski in expert-run clinics.
If you’re seeing this and thinking, “hey, I really want to be a part of this”, you can register here. Monoskiers pay $60 (not including a lift ticket) and any companions pay $25. If you’re seeing this and thinking, “hey, I’d be really interested in helping out with this”, first of all, you should! Intermediate and advanced skiers are needed as volunteers throughout this event to help carry gear and partake in other tasks.
