From the dawn of the season pass, people have been borrowing and sharing access with their friends. While this is usually against the terms that skiers and snowboarders agree to before purchasing one, people will keep sharing and resorts will keep doing everything in their power to stop it.

Whatever your thoughts on the matter might be, you must agree that posting your season pass to a local news station’s classified page for $100 a day isn’t the smartest idea in the world. You’d think that most would people understand this, but a recent posting to Utah’s KSL News shows the contrary.

Brighton Ski/Snowboard Pass – Rent my ski pass for the day or as long as you need it for $100 a day. The ticket window price now is $133-143+TAX/day depending on the day of the week.” – KSL Classified Posting

I don’t like being all grumpy, but don’t do this. There are penalties to using someone else’s ski pass, including potential legal ones. The owner of the pass could lose access to the mountain (so you shouldn’t be out here renting your pass to random people), you could permanently lose access to the mountain, and, depending on where you are, you could see some fines, community service penalties, or straight up jail time.

I know, I know, season passes and day tickets are incredibly expensive. It sucks. But you know what sucks a lot more? Sitting in jail for 180 days because you tried to use your buddies ski pass. At Vail, 31 people were cited for ski pass fraud before March 8 during the 2021/22 ski season. Yes, legally cited. It’s possible.

Don’t be so confident you won’t get caught, either. Rumors float about that lifties are given bonuses for every person they catch committing ski pass fraud. I’ve had lift operators question my mustache, because I didn’t have one when I took my Ikon Pass photo four years ago (Ikon, please make it easier to change my photo, I always miss the window). Honestly, if I was living the lifty life, I’d be ready to rat out even the chillest skiers for an extra $50, and you probably would too.
