An investigation into the crash is underway after a skier hit a tree and died Monday at Arizona Snowbowl.
CBS5 reports it happened just before 11 a.m. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office reports the skier was on the Upper Ridge trail. Investigators say the person skied just outside the boundary line and struck a tree.
Other people in the area witnessed the crash and alerted ski patrol who tried to save the victim. The skier was taken to the closest first aid station but didn’t make it.
The victim’s identity has not been released. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased.
CCSO Responds to Fatal Skiing Accident
Flagstaff, AZ –
On January 22nd, 2024 at approximately 10:56 hours, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a seriously injured skier being treated at Arizona Snowbowl resort after striking a tree. It was reported that ski patrol personnel were on scene and emergency medical services were dispatched.
Deputies responded to the area and found that the patient was in a first aid station with ski patrol personnel. Paramedics from Guardian Medical Transport personnel were also at the location. The patient apparently succumbed to injuries and was declared deceased at the location.
According to information collected by deputies, the skier was initially skiing on “Upper Ridge” run, which is labeled with a ‘black diamond’ or ‘most difficult’ terrain rating. The skier is believed to have skied just outside a boundary line and struck a tree.
Other patrons in the area apparently noticed the crash and summoned ski patrol personnel, who responded and attempted lifesaving efforts. The patient was transported to the nearest first aid station where lifesaving efforts continued but were unsuccessful.
The Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene and took custody of the decedent. The name will be withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.
This incident remains under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
