In the vastness of the ocean, it’s sometimes best not to dwell on what lies beneath you and the creatures that inhabit it. A piece of advice from Max Anderson’s TikTok video: “If you close your eyes, you won’t see a shark.” The video shows a surfer ducking under a wave and unexpectedly coming face-to-face with a great white shark.

One viewer humorously commented, “I just inked like an octopus.”

Duck diving, the technique of submerging beneath waves to avoid their impact before catching the ideal one to surf, is a common practice. However, the featured surfer on Surf tok TikTok might prefer catching the next wave to safety after this encounter.

Though shark attacks on humans are rare, surfers do face a slightly higher risk due to the similarity of surfboards’ outlines to seals, which can confuse sharks. But, as suggested earlier, one solution might be to close your eyes during a duck dive.

As echoed by a commenter, “I don’t open my eyes when I duck dive,” implying that if you don’t see it, it’s not there.”
