Is $4 for a cup of coffee too expensive? That’s what Astrid Menks, who is the wife of one of the richest men in the world, believes is the case. The New York Post reports that during the annual Allen & Co event in Sun Valley, which has become known as a summer camp for billionaires,” Astrid was heard complaining about the cost of coffee at Konditorei restaurant in Sun Valley. Astrid said that she “could get a pound of coffee” for the same price point at other coffee shops or stores.

I paid $3.56 yesterday for small iced coffee at Dunkin’, so $4 sounds like a decent deal, especially at a ski resort.

Astrid married Warren Buffett back in 2006. She’s originally from Latvia and moved to the United States at a young age. According to Money Inc, Astrid worked as a waitress at The French Cafe cocktail bar in Omaha when she met Warren. Warren’s first wife, Susan, who performed at the restaurant as a singer, introduced Menks to the Oracle of Omaha.

In retrospect, Astrid’s reluctance to pay $4 for a coffee shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the Buffett family is known for their frugalness. Warren is a big fan of coupon codes, and frequently buys breakfast from McDonald’s.

In terms of Konditorei restaurant, the Austrian-themed coffee venue is situated in the famous Sun Valley Village. The bakery features fresh-baked pastries, locally roasted, fair trade and organic coffees, and the kind of Old World hot cocoa that’s equal parts steamed milk and melted dark chocolate.” Matt Robinson, who is the Manager of Konditorei, has a 3-Star Certification from the Green Restaurant Association, the first to achieve such an accomplishment in the ski industry.

So it sounds like a nice place to grab a coffee, even if the cheapest one is $4.
