Heads up Colorado hikers! If you’re planning to check off Grays/Torreys in the next couple of days, you might find yourself stopped by helicopter activity!
According to a Facebook post from the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, helicopters have been contracted to fly in loads of cut logs to rebuild and stabilize parts of the combined Grays/Torreys trail. The initial work is planned for Wednesday, June 28, but weather could force a postponement to Thursday, June 29.
The flight path will not pass over the trail aside from a small landing area located at around 12,750 feet, but helicopter noise will likely be audible throughout most of the day. Hikers will also be briefly stopped on the trail while the helicopter drops loads of logs and returns to the trailhead.
Grays Peak (14,275 feet) and Torreys Peak (14,272 feet) are both fourteeners located on Colorado’s potion of the continental divide, with Grays standing as the tallest on the entire divide. Hikers can summit both mountains on a single 8.25 mile Class 1 route, making them some of the easier fourteeners to climb to the top of.
