37-year-old cycling icon Mark Cavendish finished stage Stage 5 of the Giro D’Italia with quite a bit of style, sliding across the finish line on his side after colliding with Italian Alberto Dainese. Even with the crash, Cavendish crossed the line fifth. According to Cycling News, however, Dainese has been relegated, placing Cavendish in fourth for the day.

I’m not an expert on UCI competition rules, but it definitely seems like punishment was deserved. Dainese’s cut across the front wheel of Cavendish didn’t seem intentional or spiteful, but it was pretty darn stupid. Glad to see Cavendish is just a bit sore from the crash.
