Big brown bears fighting in Kuhmo, Finland. The fight took place near the bear hides operated by Boreal Wildlife Centre.

Wild footage shot at Finland’s Boreal Wildlife Centre. This brawl, caught on camera next to a pile of bear skins, is impossible to look away from. The fact that it was shot from three different perspectives allows us to fully understand what’s going on.

Note: Distinctive ‘grizzled’ hair and powerful shoulder humps are telltale signs of this species.

Growing louder, the two bears advance on each other while standing on their hind legs to give the impression of being much taller than they really are. One of them uses a tree as cover from the other one. The tree plays a significant role in the conflict by temporarily separating the bears from each other. Each bear will use its fangs, claws, and weight to attempt to win the fight. They’ve been at it for quite some time now; neither bear seems willing to back down.

With the camera in closer, we see the brutality of the wrestling encounter that quickly develops from the first brawl. It’s not hard to imagine that bears may sustain catastrophic injuries in these kinds of conflicts. Fur is being pulled from skin in visible and audible clumps.

Around the middle of this encounter, one bear looks to have the upper hand, with the other bear lying on the ground on its back. Then, it seems like exhaustion has set in, since they both halt for a little break. Both bears take a moment to catch their breath as they move away from one another.

Grizzly bears are typically solitary creatures, although they form large groups during mating. Most battles between guys occur at this time. They are fighting for territory and access to the ladies.
