According to KCPW, Brighton Resort, UT will implement a new parking policy that gives preferential spots to those who carpool.

Cars with three or more people will be given direct access to Brighton’s main lot on holidays, weekends, and powder days. Cars with less than three people will be directed to park in overflow lots and will have to take a shuttle to the slopes.

Brighton Resort Director of Marketing Jared Winkler told KCPW that this new policy is meant to improve access to Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

If you’ve ever been up the Cottonwoods on a busy day, you know that the traffic line to access the resorts can take well over an hour from the entrance of the canyons. Winkler said that Brighton has had to turn away cars on busy days when their lots fill up. He estimates that half of the vehicles that visit Brighton only have 1 occupant.

Winkler is hoping that the new policy will encourage more skiers and boarders to carpool, and free-up some traffic in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

I’m all for policies like this. Less traffic, less pollution, and more skiing all sound like good things to me.
