Today, we had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of the first indoor ski slope in North America. BIG Snow @ American Dream Meadowlands, a retail and entertainment mall complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, finally opened after ten years and multiple bankruptcies.
Conditions on the slopes were loose granular, a surface that will hardly ever change due to the fact you’re skiing indoors with a set temperature of 28°F, no wind, no sunlight, no natural snow, or rain. A few years ago we skied at the indoor ski slope in Dubai, Ski Dubai, and the conditions were nearly identical. I guess it’s safe to say that you can call this “indoor conditions”.
The slope is not very long and has very little change in pitch until the bottom. There is, however, a small terrain park and a kid’s slope accessed by a magic carpet.
Don’t expect to get rad at BIG Snow, but if you’re looking for a unique ski experience, teaching a loved one to ski or just need something to do on a rainy day, its good fun and worth a visit.
Since the ski slope will be open 365 days a year, today was the first and last opening day the ski slope will ever celebrate.
