Ski resorts in New Zealand are off to a slow start to the 2019 ski season. Ski areas are firing up the snow guns and hoping that more favorable weather conditions materialize.
Treble Cone ski area near Wanaka was set to open last Thursday but has pushed back its kick off due to low snow levels.
“Mother Nature hasn’t played her part yet, we’re just waiting for her to come to the party,” said Treble Cone ski area general manager Toby Arnott to local media. “Unfortunately, we won’t be able to open the mountain on Thursday 27th June as we’d planned. We know that’s disappointing and as soon as we have enough snow to open, we’ll be right on it,” said the resort on its Facebook page.
Coronet Peak near Queenstown is open thanks to more robust snowmaking systems. The resort has not seen snow for nearly a month but the ski areas 222 snow cannons helped the resort open on a layer of manmade snow.
The good news is that it looks as though a much needed dump is on it way.
A series of fronts are expected to cross the region between tonight and Thursday bringing some precipitation with them. Meanwhile the snowmaking team are hard at it making their magic as conditions allow. We’ll keep you up to date as the fronts come through.
