Brazilian surf champion, Luzimara Souza, has died following a lighting strike while she was surfing at Leste-Oeste Beach in Fortaleza. She was 23 years old.

Luzimara was in the water with other surfers when they were hit by the strike. Another victim, a  17-year-old, was taken to the hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Souza was training for the Brazilian Surfing Championship, which is set for April 6 and 7 in Caponga. According to her coach, Jehova Rodrigues, she won the Ceará and Brazilian championships in 2018.
