Where Will The Snow Fall In The Next 7 Days? [Powderchasers]

Summary:

The past 7 days have featured over 5 feet of snow for some Utah resorts (Alta and Snowbird just tipped 100-inch bases), 2-3 feet for Colorado (33 inches at Vail and Steamboat), and 20 inches in the Tetons in just 48 hours! Even the north San Juans at Telluride scored 28 inches. Big Sky scored 25 inches at mid-mountain in 7 days (Higher up top).

The ski areas that received the most snow were favored by the NW wind direction (*Telluride scores with this scenario even though other southern mountains received little snow). Vail Pass and Steamboat were the clear winners here. I was a bit surprised to see Eldora at 9 inches and especially Winter Park at 15. That was not in my original forecast. Snow ratios were at or above 20:1 with colder temps. That brings very high snow totals with very low moisture (20 inches= 1 inch of water).

The chase has come to an end in the West with the exception of a teasing 1-4 inches today for Montana that will skiff the Tetons and Colorado late Friday/Saturday. Another quick moving system will spread snow to Montana Sunday/Monday that teases the Tetons (Light) and Colorado. That system may be slightly deeper but nothing worth a long term chase.

Short Term Forecast:

The chase has come to an end in the West with the exception of a teasing 1-4 inches today for Montana that will skiff the Tetons and Colorado late Friday/Saturday. Another quick moving system will spread snow to Montana Sunday/Monday that teases the Tetons (Light) and Colorado. That system may be slightly deeper but nothing worth a long term chase.

Light snow is currently falling over the Tetons and much of north/central Montana (Missoula, Great Falls). expect a few inches at these resorts today. It’s possible the Tetons land up to 3-4 inches by late PM Friday. Snow returns to the northern Rockies Sunday late AM to Monday. This storm will increase snow for Whitefish (2-4) and rapidly move south over southern Montana and Wyoming late Sunday. Northerly winds are not favorable for the Tetons (Pushes moisture east) but might be more favorable for Red Lodge Mountain that sits on the Montana/Wyoming border (light or moderate amounts). Bridger Bowl and Big Sky may also see light snow.

Colorado grabs light freshies late Sunday night into Monday favoring resorts along or east of the Continental Divide. Loveland, Winter Park, Eldora, and A-Basin may be in scoring position for light snowfall for your first turns Monday.

In the East, a decent storm is on tap for Tuesday/Wednesday. If I were chasing next week, that may be the best spot to position yourself. The East will see light snow prior with several light systems that will even make the late Tuesday/Wednesday event better. Unfortunately, there will be warm air arriving initially with the moisture keeping the highest totals at the summits. Much colder temps slam New England Wednesday and beyond. Snow quality may be best in northern New England. Mount Washington Summits may see 15-23 inches..

Extended Forecast:

The Rockies stay dry until the models show an increased chance of snowfall for the west beginning in early February. The GFS and EURO disagree on the placement of systems that are due for the February 2nd and beyond. One solution shows a decent push of moisture for the Sierra and another shows a better chance of snow for the Pacific Northwest and BC.

February 1st ensembles (Euro) hinting at a trough entering the west. The East also looks active.

It is likely that these systems will move over the Rockies at some point in the early February period with more details to follow on an additional post. Hopefully, this brings another active period for the west.
