In the alps, more than a dozen people have been reported dead in avalanche-related incidents– and that’s just in the past month. This week, that number increased yet again as another ski patroller died in a slide near Portes du Soleil ski area reports The Local.

The patroller was part of a two-man team that was tasked with using explosives to trigger avalanches above the pistes in order to ensure safety at the ski domain. The slide released at approximately 11:25am on Monday. While one of the men was able to free himself and attempt a rescue of the buried victim– the attempts to save his partner’s life proved unsuccessful.

Just days prior, two French ski patrollers perished in an explosives accident related to avalanche mitigation.

*Our thoughts are with the victim’s friends and family.
