Forget getting out of your car before a mountain pass to wrestle on snow chains, if you had these new reconfigurable wheel/tracks developed by the The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, you would just a press a button and be good to go:
DARPA: Radically Enhanced Mobility—Ability to traverse diverse off-road terrain, including slopes and various elevations. Capabilities of interest include revolutionary wheel/track and suspension technologies that would enable greater terrain access and faster travel both on- and off-road compared to existing ground vehicles.
No telling when or if these would become available to the general public but they would be sick option if you do a bunch of driving in the snow:
