A mother and son have died in an apparent roof avalanche incident outside their condo in Lake Tahoe on Sunday reports KRON 4.
The two had been skiing at Kirkwood during the day before returning to their condo. Upon their return, a slab of snow released from the roof, burying the mother and her 7 year-old underneath approximately 3 feet of snow. An undersheriff with the Alpine County Sheriff’s Department called the tragic incident “a freak accident.” The victims have since been identified as Olga Perkovic and Aaron Goodstein.
The first person to alert authorities was the mother of Perkovic, who was also staying in the area at the time of the avalanche. At first, authorities scoured the slopes of Kirkwood for the two but then a neighbor discovered a glove near the roof debris. Ultimately 9-1-1 was called and the two were uncovered and flown to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead. The recent storm to hit Tahoe brought with it a volatile avalanche cycle. That danger was in full display across the state this weekend as multiple burials were reported from Squaw Valley to Mammoth.
*Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s friends and family
