The move came after multiple investigations indicated that Russias’ olympic team @Sochi participated in a ‘state-sponsored’ doping program that spanned multiple sports whose athletes won medals. Russian olympic officials, government officials, and their athletes will be prohibited from attending the games let alone competing. The country’s flag will not be included at the opening cemerony in Pyeongchang, South Korea and any medals won by Russia at the Sochi Olympics will be forfeit.

“IOC SUSPENDS RUSSIAN NOC AND CREATES A PATH FOR CLEAN INDIVIDUAL ATHLETES TO COMPETE IN PYEONGCHANG 2018 UNDER THE OLYMPIC FLAG.”

Any Russian athletes who receive what the NYT calls “special dispensation” will be required to wear a nondescript uniform without any reference to the Russia. When they appear, the Olympic anthem will be played in place of the competitor’s home nation. The IOC is also considering the move to require Russia’s olympic committee to pay retribution for costs incurred by the investigations that lead to the ban.

*They maintain that if the ROC abides by the terms of their punishment, they can lift Russia’s olympic ban at the close of the 2018 ceremonies.

IOC SUSPENDS RUSSIAN NOC AND CREATES A PATH FOR CLEAN INDIVIDUAL ATHLETES TO COMPETE IN PYEONGCHANG 2018 UNDER THE OLYMPIC FLAG

VI. This panel will be guided in its decisions by the following principles:

He continued: “As an athlete myself, I feel very sorry for all the clean athletes from all NOCs who are suffering from this manipulation. Working with the IOC Athletes’ Commission, we will now look for opportunities to make up for the moments they have missed on the finish line or on the podium.”
