After a horrible start to the ski season, Australia is now in the midst of an all-time winter after a snowstorm dumped more than 4 feet of snow on select mountains in the Victoria and New South Wales provinces.

Out of all the ski areas that benefitted from the #BlizzardOfOZ, Thredbo is in the lead with a 51″ storm total that’s literally burying the resort as I write this. The conditions should stick around this week as snowy weather and around freezing temps will continue to deliver pow all week.

AVALANCHE DANGER HIGH: Avalanches have been reported in the Victorian Alps with local officials warning backcountry travelers to avoid avalanche-prone terrain at all costs until the danger subsides.

One of the more interesting stories out of this storm came in the form of Jim Cantore’s favorite version of precipitation — Thundersnow.” According to The Australian, Hotham Alpine Resort had to preemptively shut down for a short period of time after witnessing the natural phenomenon and for worry that lightning might follow.

LET IT SNOW!
