Shanghai Daily reports that a man was jailed for 10 days and fined 500 yuan (US$73.44) for kicking down an ancient stalagmite while visiting a cave popular with tourists in Songtao County, Guizhou Province, China. The incident was recorded by CCTV on May 29th documenting the deliberate destruction of the 30cm long geological feature which took tens of thousands of years to form.
This is an extreme case but we all have to do our best to travel lightly when visiting the natural preserves of the world. Be respectful and make sure future generations have the same opportunity to enjoy.
