Just two days after announcing their acquisition of Intrawest, Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners announced this morning they will be adding Mammoth Resorts to their ski resort roster.

Mammoth Resorts includes their flagship and namesake ski area in addition to June Mountain, Snow Summit, and Bear Mountain. According to the Denver Post, no public pricetag has been placed on the sale yet but estimates are in the hundreds of millions. The last time the resort group traded hands in 2005, it sold for $365 million.
The move is an obvious response to Vail’s acquisition-heavy ski season that saw the addition of Whistler Blackcomb and Stowe. With Mammoth Resorts and Intrawest in tow, the KSL/Aspen Ski Co partnership will include 15 ski areas across 4 states as well as Canada. That portfolio of ski areas stacks up rather evenly to Vail Resorts’ 13 ski resorts spread across 7 states not including Perisher in Australia and Whistler Blackcomb in Canada.
So far, all signs are pointing to a new, multi-resort pass managed by KSL and Aspen Skiing Company that will compete with Vail’s dominant Epic Pass. We’ll just have to wait and see…
