“The victim was skiing with her husband and her three teenage boys when she fell approximately 1,000 feet to her death.” -Commander Mark Morlock

Rachel Dewey, 48, from Colorado Springs died Sunday while skiing the Little Italy Couloir trail at the top of Pikes Peak.  She was a middle school social studies teacher at the Banning Lewis Ranch Academy. KRDO reports she lost control toward the bottom of the run near Glen Cove. The area is located past mile marker 11 on Pikes Peak Highway, at an elevation of approximately 11,500 feet. Commander Morlock confirmed the victim was an advanced level skier:

“Were told that the victim and the entire family were all experienced skiers. It’s a very unfortunate, tragic accident.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family at this extremely difficult time. Banning Lewis Ranch Academy will be closed Monday morning and grief counselors will be on hand for students. Resources are also available to help students.

Parents can call the Aspen Pointe Crisis Line (719) 635-7000 and the Crisis Hot-Line at (719) 633-3819 for support.
