The Italian helicopter carrying a team of 5 rescuers was had picked up an injured skier from the Campo Felice area and was flying to a hospital in the provincial capital of L’Aquila when it flew through dense fog and a long hanging cloud and crashed into the side of a mountain. The helicopter crashed at 12pm at an approximate height of 600 meters, killing all 6 aboard.
The Sun is reporting that weather initially stalled local authorities from finding the wreckage site but was eventually located half way up a mountain a couple of miles from Camp Felice:
“Rescue teams have reached the wreck of the helicopter and they found the bodies of the six deceased in the snow.” -Local Police Spokesman
This tragic accident is unrelated but geographically close to the devastating avalanche that decimated a hotel on the other side of the Gran Sasso mountain range (62 miles from the helicopter crash site).
