A curious icy formation in Michigan is leaving locals scratching their heads as to how something like this could be 100% natural.

Known by hydrologists as an “ice pan” or “ice circle” the following formations can range from 3 feet in diameter to approximately 700 feet reports wdtn.com. The formations are caused by water’s unique qualities that ScieneAlert.com sums up in the following statement.

“So when water [melts] off of the discs, it [is] denser than anything around it, and [falls] straight down. The higher the temperature of the surrounding water, the bigger the density difference, and the faster the melting water [sinks]. But water can’t really go straight down. If there’s any sideways movement at all, the water will start spinning as it sinks, just like it spins as it goes down a drain or in your toilet.” – Science Alert

Whatever the case, this is one weird phenomenon that shows just water holds one of the most strange and special molecular builds in the natural world.
