Two Skiers Saved After Avalanche Burial @ Mt. Rose, Lake Tahoe

screen-shot-2017-01-05-at-6-10-32-pmTwo skiers were rescued after getting buried in a backcountry avalanche near Mt. Rose in the Lake Tahoe area according to Bay Area CBS.  Both were wearing beacons and had proper avalanche rescue gear.

It is not yet clear if the two were rescued by other skiers or the search crews that were already nearby helping 3 cars that were buried by a different avalanche on an access road to the resort (no one was hurt in the car burials). Regardless of who gets the save, the Truckee Meadows Fire Department reported the skiers were in good condition when they were pulled from the snow.

70 inches of snow has accumulated at the peak of Mt. Rose since Sunday and although The Sierra Avalanche Center has lowered the avalanche risk level from high to considerable, they warn the backcountry is still very unstable.

This is a positive reminder that beacons are ultra important and should not be left home without. Stay safe out there folks.
