On average, about 7.6% of the area of the Lower 48 states have snow on the ground by November 8th, currently that total only 1% as reported by The Weather Channel. This is the lowest amount of snow coverage in 10 years according to the NOAA’s National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center’s Snow National Snow Analysis,
The few pockets of snow cover exist in the northern and central Rockies, Sierra and Cascades (mostly at high elevation) and few locations in far northern New Hampshire and Maine. 
The scarcity of snow cover can be attributed to record warmth, a jet stream that has been tracking north through Canada and wet and Pacific storms that have raised snow levels to only the highest peaks.

Fear not winter lovers as we pass the halfway point of fall with this pitiful amount of snow coverage, there has been no correlation between early November snow cover and the severity of the winter weather as we head into the new year.
The Weather Channel equates it to the first week of the NFL season. No matter what the results, good or bad, it is just too soon to make meaningful predictions about the winter’s bounty in the future. Stay positive and maybe pour out a bit of your next tasty beverage for Ullr.
