This weekend, a massive earthquake shook Italy with one tremor actually breaking off a piece of Monte Vettore (8,123′) reports Sky TG24.

While the extent of the fracture has yet to be explored, some scientists believe the crack might indicate a separation between the upper reaches of the mountain and its more solid, foundation bedrock.

The earthquake is just a part of a larger seismic story that started back in August when a 6.2 earthquake killed roughly 300 people. The earthquakes are the result of a tectonic pull that is seeing a portion of the Tyrrhenian Sea expanding west.
