WATCH: Skiing Doctor Triggers Wet Slab Avalanche In Colorado Backcountry

YouTube Poster

Glad Doc Kedrowski skied out of that one. He was on a mission to ski every every Colorado 14er in the winter/spring of 2016 when this slide broke lose in the Sangre De Cristos. Here is his account of the incident:

“While skiing the northeast couloir on 14er Mt. Lindsey in the Sangre De Cristos, peak #31 of his 14er ski project, Dr. Jon Kedrowski triggered a 12″ slab in the lower reaches of the couloir and sent snow down the gully. This is the reality of tackling a peak less than 24 hours after a fresh storm. There were significant graupel pellets that had collected in the basin underneath the powder that allowed the snow to slide down still relatively slowly. A good lesson in risk management, skiing left and out of the path of the slide to beneath a rock outcropping to let the slide pass was the best option. This during Dr. Jon’s attempt to ski every Colorado 14er in the winter/spring season of 2016.”

Stay safe out there buddy. We commend you on your mission.
