Rockaway Township, New Jersey- Next time you try to go for an amateur spelunking adventure, make sure it’s a cave and not home to a hibernating bear.
On December 20th, a Boy Scout failed to take that possibility into account and after heading into what he thought was just your run of the mill geologic formation known as a cave, he quickly found out it was the winter hideaway for a Jersey black bear. The man in question, Scout Master Chris Petronino was on an unorganized boy scout excursion at Split Rock reservoir, when the trip went horribly wrong reports ABC11.com.
After entering the cave, the bear attacked Petronino and a man vs. bear fight ensued. The scout leader eventually escaped the bear’s clutches but sustained serious injuries while he screamed for three scouts to call 911. Eventually, medical support arrived on the scene and he was subsequently airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Petronino sustained serious wounds but survived and has since been released from the hospital. The scouts on the scene were unharmed.
If you walk away from a bear fight alive, you won…
