NOAA is reporting that “forecast confidence is increasing that we will see a significant snowfall event above 7000 feet”. A winter storm watch is now in effect. YAHOO!

…WINTER STORM WATCH NOW IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY EVENING THROUGH LATE THURSDAY NIGHT…

THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY EVENING THROUGH LATE THURSDAY NIGHT.

* TIMING: MODERATE TO HEAVY RAINS AND HIGH ELEVATION SNOW WILL DEVELOP IN THE NORTHERN SIERRA WEDNESDAY NIGHT… CHANGING OVER TO SNOW THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: NEAR TWO FEET ABOVE 8000 FEET…ONE FOOT OR MORE ABOVE 7000 FEET…AND AROUND 6 INCHES AT LAKE TAHOE LEVEL. SNOW FORECASTS BELOW 7000 FEET ARE LOW CONFIDENCE DUE TO UNCERTAINTIES WITH WHEN SNOW LEVELS DROP THURSDAY.

* SNOW LEVELS: 8000 FEET WEDNESDAY… DROPPING BELOW 7000 FEET AFTER MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND TO LAKE LEVEL THURSDAY MORNING. * WINDS: SOUTHWEST WINDS 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 35 MPH. GUSTS ON THE SIERRA RIDGES TO 70 MPH WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

* IMPACTS: THIS WINTER STORM WATCH IS INTENDED TO SERVE AS A HEADS UP THAT TRAVEL OVER THE SIERRA AND AROUND LAKE TAHOE IS LIKELY TO BE IMPACTED BY PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY. EXPECT DELAYS…AND CONSIDER PLANNING ALTERNATE ROUTES OR ADJUST TRAVEL TIMES TO AVOID THE HEAVY SNOW. I-80 OVER DONNER PASS AND HIGHWAY 50 OVER ECHO PASS WILL BE IMPACTED. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY CREATE HAZARDOUS WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS.
