Robert Smith the founder of smith optics and the creator of the first double pane goggle dies at 78.

Dr. Bob Smith was an icon in the snow sports industry, and not to mention the all time ski bum. He was the guy who figured out how to reduced the foggy goggle problem, he did this by creating goggles with two panes and a sealed thermal lens.

The innovative founder of Smith Optics, Smith died on Wednesday, April 18, in Palm Desert, California. His wife, Jean, of 48 years was at his bedside. The 78 year old had a pacemaker implanted a few days earlier to combat a slow heartbeat. Complications ensued and he did not survive, according to his son, Drew Smith. “He needed to see on the hill, so he made it happen […] His drive and passion for skiing is second to none. He had a lot of ‘Smith’ kind of days.” Drew Smith Powdermag.com

Out thoughts go out to his family and friends … and thank you Bob for ‘making great days better’.

Upcoming memorials in Ketchum are currently being planned.
