4 inches of snow in squaw valley on May 15, 2011

Today is May 15, 2011 & there is a solid 4-5 inches of snow on the Valley Floor at Squaw as of 6am and it’s still nuking out there.  I woke up, looked outside, and seriously couldn’t believe it!

At 8,700 feet at Squaw right now it’s 17F and the wind is gusting at 48mph.  FULL ON WINTER!

Snow levels are currently at 4000 feet and the radar looks like February:

I’m just waiting to hear bombs!  What is Squaw gonna get open?  What time are they gonna open?  Are they gonna open?

UPDATE  7:57AM:  Headwall closed for the day.  Bombs going off.

Welp, the Amgen Tour of California is screwed. I wonder what their “contingency” plan was.  Kind of a bummer, tho, as I bet they won’t come back to Tahoe after this treatment.  I really wanted to see that race.  Hopefully, the snow will melt off and they can still race in Squaw tomorrow, but looking out my window right now, I kinda doubt it.

Today could truly give us some epic skiing at Squaw.  We’ll keep ya posted.  Check out the Twitter feed throughout the day.
