Simply put, the Ortovox S1 is the transceiver you need to have. It’s ease of use is second to none. As soon as you open the unit the transceiver switches to search mode and displays the location of victims. With up to four victims on your screen, you can then mark the locations of victims and cancel out their signal, reducing clutter on your screen. Also noteworthy, are other tools that most transceivers don’t have such as an inclinometer, compass, and thermometer. The only shortcoming I’ve had with this unit is the fact that it doesn’t turn on when you put it on like other devices. However, everybody does a beacon check every time they go into the backcountry, so this should catch this problem. Also, in cases of extreme impact, the screen is damageable. Just try this beacon, and you’ll be sold. Truly there’s no substitute for simplicity and ease of use.
