TELUS Festival Day 2 | Boarderstyle

April 16th, 2012 by

Sunday April 15th was the second annual Monster Energy Shred Show Boarderstyle. This event was created last year and it combines the speed of boardercross with some mandatory freestyle. Competitors race down the course over rollers jumps and boxes with one final kicker at the end where competitors are faced with a mandatory spin.  Imagine going into a jump as fast as you can, knowing you have to spin and then seeing 3 other people flailing through the air with you!  The event was open to anyone so a ton of people tried their luck on the course against Olympians like Justin Lamoureaux and last years winner Jon Versteeg and lets not forget the living legend Terje Haakonsen.  Overall the event was great to watch, fast paced and tons of action. Terje threw a huge tweaked backflip on the last kicker but that only got him 2nd place behind Will Jackways who took home the trophy and the bragging rights that he beat Terje.

TELUS Festival Day 1 | Big Hip Contest

April 16th, 2012 by

Its Telus Festival time in Whistler and for those who don’t know that means 10 days of contest, events, free concerts and of course parties! This  Saturday April 15th was the first major contest of the 2012 Telus Festival in Whistler.  They started it off with a bang with the Monster Energy Shred Show’s Big Hip Contest.  With $15,00 going to the winner everyone was going HUGE!  The warm weather made the hip a bit sloppy so most people ended up hitting it like a big jump.  Darcy Sharpe Walked away with the $15,000,  Antoine Truchon came in second and Jon Versteeg ended up third.

Shooting From the Hip | Blower Pow & Blue Sky | Last Weekend was Amazing @ Whistler

April 11th, 2012 by

Whistler Blackcomb still has pow – where as most other ski resorts in North America have begun their closing ceremony complete with beach parities and slush cups.

Here’s a video from last weekend up Joffre Peak on the Duffy. Eliel Hindert and the Unofficial Whistler crew followed Andrew Strain on a walk and ended up at a sweet zone. We built features, hit lines as Andrew shot photo + video. Here’s the shots he captures while “shooting from the hip”

Jake Cohn – Eats S!#T on Air Jordan | A Few Years Ago

April 6th, 2012 by

Locals know the worst thing about Air Jordan is the competition. In order to get AJ untouched you gotta get up early and be almost first in the Peak Chair line up, then once you upload make a B-Line for the AJ mound and hope you beat the Ausis to it. Once in the zone you must quickly catch your breath, ignore the hundreds of people screaming at you from the lift line, and then DROP.

OR

You an hit it on a shitty day and hope you make it.

This was my mistake. Ya see I had always wanted to hit Air Jordan but never wanted to compete with the Australians, British, Kiwis, and Canadians who sideslip into the line. So three years ago on a sub-par day with trace amounts of new snow + howling wind I decided to give’er.

This was a bad move because over the past few days the wind had shaped some (very hard) wind lips in the landing, and removed all the snow off the middle section. “This doesn’t look too bad I thought” -so I went for it-  Bad idea… I got backseat, then launched into the wind lip bounced and hit another wind lip then came to a dead stop. And omewhere in the twisting, truing, bouncing and wind lip smacking I fractured my T12 vertebra.

Sunny Park Edit @Whistler Blackcomb

April 6th, 2012 by

It’s about that time the park skis came out. With still two months left on Blackcomb Mountain some would argue too soon … But not for Dalton Waite, Andreas Unterberger (who spins like a top), Tim Sprague, Justin Jackson and Nick McNutt. Filmed by Maurizio von Flotow. Check out McNutt  from @1:45 in the video -he kills it in the park with fully rockered 194cm powder skis.
