Squaw Valley Conditions = Wet, Warm, & FUN | Video & Photo Tour of March 14th, 2012

March 14th, 2012 by

Before we get into todays conditions, I want you to all know that it’s been a BIZARRE year in Squaw.  Today, I rolled up to KT…and….KT Cheryl….was on 2nd chair.  It was messed up.

This video below expresses how I felt when I saw Cheryl on 2nd chair today…

SQUAW CONDITIONS TODAY:

- 9-22” of new snow reported

- Lots of avalanches and avy debris everywhere (East bowl ripped wall to wall 2 feet deep)

- First few runs on KT were smooth and wind pressed and creamy as heck

 - It was damn fun in the morning

- Good Runs Today:  West Face, Tom’s Tumble, Red Dog Ridge

- After it got tracked up and got very warm and my genitalia got wet it wasn’t that great anymore

VIDEO: Squaw Valley March 13th | I Think We Can Call It a “Powder Day”

March 14th, 2012 by

This little bastard (video) was causing us all kinds of hell yesterday.  Just now, we got it to work.  Day late and a dollar short, huh?

But, it’s still good to see how yesterday was and how the skiing then compares to today…which will be up in a bit.

from yesterday:

I think we can call today a powder day.  Especially given what we’ve been dealing with this season, it more than qualifies.

The mental forecast I had going into today was heinous.  1-2” of new snow on very hard ice.  Groomers only.

Reality proved much less daunting than the mental image I’d produced.  There was about 4” of new snow on softish snow, the wind was insane (78mph gusts on the ridge at 3pm), and the skiing was good.

By the time I made it to Squaw at noon, Red Dog had already been closed due to high winds.  I lapped Far East until I was too wet to smile and it was fun.

You certainly weren’t stuck just on the groomers, you could ski everywhere.  The best skiing we found was the trees off the huge switchback of the Red Dog groomer (skier’s left of the top of Far East).  Smooth turns and plenty of mini log airs.

Hopefully it doesn’t rain too much the next two days…

Griffin Post Smoothing-Out Valdez, Alaska

March 13th, 2012 by

This video will calm and soothe your nerves.  It’ll also help you realize that it’s time to go to Alaska…

Griffin Post has made the big time.  TGR calls him up, demands he goes heli skiing with them in Alaska, he accepts, and crushes everything he can get his skis on.

The only question we have is:  “why the hell didn’t TGR call Griffin up years ago?”

This video is POV footage of UnofficialJackson.com’s Griffin Post going nuts in Valdez, Alaska this past February.

Good on ya, Grif.

You guys ready for spring AK heli ski season?   There’s gonna be some nutty footage coming outta AK this year.

Winter’s Not Over Till The Fat Lady Sings (And There Are No Fat Girls in Japan)

March 13th, 2012 by

Don’t pack up the powder skis just yet, because it’s still winter in Hakuba. After a temporary lapse into spring-like conditions, winter is back, with a foot and a half of fresh falling in the past 24 hours. This video features a storm day skiing at Happo, and a bluebird powder day at Cortina. It was great to ski some deep snow again, as I think we were all starting to forget what it feels like. Winter’s not over till the fat lady sings, and there are no fat girls in Japan.

Red Bull Cold Rush Wrap-Up Teaser | To Show on NBC on March 24th

March 13th, 2012 by

The Red Bull Cold Rush went down well at Silverton, CO except for one huge glitch.  The Cliffs Day was canceled after and avalanche came down and cleared out the snow need for that zone to be huckable.  A definite bummer as last year, the cliff day was the best day.

The Cold Rush will air on NBC on March 24th @ 1PM ET.

Dane Tudor won for the boys while Rachael Burks won for the girls.

Squaw Valley’s Jackie Paaso got 2nd place for the gals.

Does it look like it was better or lesser than last years’ Cold Rush?

Yeah, we thought so, too.  Way better last year.
