Mass start ski race @ The Remarkables

After two year hiatus, The Red Bull Homerun returned to New Zealand over the weekend and it looks like the Le Mans-style mass start at The Remarkables Ski Resort was predictably chaotic and awesome.

Unlike the beginning of most ski and snowboard races where athletes are wearing their gear when the starting bell sounds, Homerun participants line up standing in their boots and have to sprint to their skis and boards before strapping and hurtling themselves downhill.

As you might imagine 250 people running in snow can be a hectic and that is definitely by design.

Prizes were awarded for the fastest skier and snowboarder in the male and female division. This year the fastest snowboarders got a Burton Snowboards and the fastest skiers received Atomic skis. Participants were encouraged to wear costumes and there were prizes handed out for best dressed as well.

Love to see a bit of levity in competitive snow sports. Cheers to Red Bull, The Remarkables and to all 250 racers.
