“Caught in a slide an Highway 89, South of Alpine. 100 yard debris field hit the road. Expect delays.” – David Ortiz

That title might sound like an Onion article, but David Ortiz and Neal Allen are lucky to be alive after their vehicle was buried by an avalanche on highway 89 outside Tahoe City, CA.

Update: David Ortiz posted this message to our page. Just a little more info; this picture was taken about forty-five minutes after being buried. We immediately turned the car off and called 911. Once we knew help was on the way, there was nothing left to do but keep our spirits up.”

Early this morning an avalanche on Highway 89 hit the vehicle of two men were traveling in. While still trapped under the avalanche debris, the men were able to get cell service and post this selfie (see above) to Facebook. The pair looked to be in good sprits, gave the thumbs up and sported wide grins. Here was their message, “Caught in a slide an Highway 89, South of Alpine. 100 yard debris field hit the road. Expect delays.”

The side caught two cars in its path, the California Highway Patrol traffic incident webpage noted at 3:30 a.m. The avalanche slide path covered 200 feet and was 12 feet high at its termination, according to the CHP.

Thankfully no one was injured in the slide.
