Steamboat Ski Area has taken an unusual step to ensure housing for their seasonal employees….cash incentives to the tune of $200 a month if a landlord can house an employee for under $500 a month as reported by Scott Franz from Steamboat Today.

A recent survey found Steamboat is 180 beds short of being able to satisfy the demand for seasonal workforce housing. Currently 50 employees are sitting on the waiting list for a room at the Ponds, the ski area’s workforce housing complex. Additionally the resort houses leases entire sections of defunct hotels. The Alpiner, a lodge located downtown, houses 80 seasonal employees.

Employee housing options in Steamboat, as with many resort towns, are in short supply in recent years due to rising rents and the explosion of property owners using vacation rental sites like Airbnb.

Steamboat property owners who want to rent rooms to ski area employees can contact Housing Manager Alison Brodie at abrodie@steamboat.com or 970-871-5133. Landlord applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis and the program only applies to workers currently on the ski area’s housing waitlist and not ski area employees who are already renting a room elsewhere in Steamboat Springs. Nice try.
