It should come as no great surprise to east coast skiers that conditions up at Tuckerman Ravine are pretty boney due to a subpar snow year and aren’t drawing the normal amount of backcountry skiers and snowboarders.
The Boston Herald spoke with White Mountain district ranger with the U.S. Forest Service, Justin Preisendorfer, who had this to say:
“On a Saturday in early April you could see well over 4,000 (skiers). I think we would be lucky to get 400 on a busy day this year,”
The White Mountain National Forest only recorded 92 inches of snow this winter, far below the average annual snowfall of 169 inches according to the National Weather Service in Gray.
If you head up to Tuckerman Ravine please exercise caution and wear your helmets. It sounds like there is going to be some exposure up there that even seasoned veterans to the area may not have experienced.
