Since opening in 1967, Eldora ski area has been battered by winds. So in order to avoid the turbulent winds coming off the Continental Divide, the ski area proposed an expansion plan to realign lifts and add terrain to the existing resort’s boundaries. The proposal, which has been in the works since 2011, recently went under review and the Forest Service’s newly revised proposal is a mixed bag for the ski area that hoped to expand its boundaries reports the Denver Post.
So far, the expansion of the resort’s boundaries has been limited in scope compared to the original draft, while other aspects including realigning lifts, creating new runs, enhancing snowmaking systems and creating an on mountain restaurant have been approved. As it looks, any expansion of the resorts boundary is currently on hold as Forest Service officials will delve deeper into the environmental impacts of such a move.
The boundary expansion came under harsh criticism earlier this year from environmental groups in the area, who said that the expansion would negatively affect wildlife habitat surrounding Middle Boulder Creek.
