As Squaw Valley plans on expanding its village area, one of California’s most prominent environmental groups is speaking up. Sierra Watch, a group based out of Nevada City recently voiced its opinion, citing material from an Environmental Impact Study that portrays a variety of potential impacts including traffic congestion, obstructed views, and lots of noise.

Tom Mooers, who authored the Sierra Watch statement, indicates that the plan will include “a series of highrise hotels and condo projects with more than 1,500 new bedrooms and a massive indoor amusement park as wide as a Walmart and ten-stories tall, with waterslides, fake rivers, arcades, and simulated sky-diving.”

Needless to say, it sounds over the top.

However, KSL Capital Partners LLC, who purchased the ski area in 2010, say they have already scaled back certain aspects of the Squaw Valley Village Specific Plan to accommodate local and environmental concerns, adding that Squaw Valley needs to function as a year-around resort to be sustainable.

In the meantime, Sierra Watch is asking for people to write letters to the Placer County Community Development Resource Agency and attend a meeting on June 25th, where the public will be able to ask questions and make comments. The hearing will be held at the North Lake Tahoe Event Center.
