laCurrent look at St Anton

On Monday afternoon, a group of skiers skiing off piste at St Anton triggered an avalanche the left two dead.

Four out of the group of seven were caught and taken 800m down the mountainside. A mountain guide who was not part of the group observed the accident and notified rescue crews immediately, upon which the alpine police, three helicopters, and mountain rescue services came to aid. The two members of the party who were killed, aged between 43 and 53, were reported to be Germans. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident comes after heavy snow and warnings of considerable risk. There have been numerous avalanches in the area and last Friday a Dutchman died in Nauders in Austria. Three other people died in other avalanches in Austria last week.
